Big God, Small Suitcase
Last week, Blake and I had a really awesome opportunity to speak to the kids at our church’s VBS! As part of VBS, the kids learn about missions. They learn stories of missionaries and hear about what they really do. Our Sunday School teacher was the one in charge of the Missions portion, and she suggested that we go talk to the kids about where we were going and what we would be doing. She also suggested that we share the list of items we will be taking and giving to the children in Africa.
I’m so glad we were able to talk to those sweet little ones! We told them that we would be working with kids who don’t have mommies and daddies. And when we told them about the items (like bed sheets and craft supplies), they were SO excited about giving. Questions like “Can I give my toy truck?” or “What about Wii games?” really just revealed their pure hearts about sharing with those who don’t have as much as they do. If only more Christians had that same open-mindedness about sharing what God has blessed us with!
Side note: It was really odd being called a “missionary” for the first time by those lil kids. It doesn’t really feel like I’m a missionary. I’m just me, going where God has called me. I guess that’s what a missionary is…All I’m saying is it felt weird. Like the first time someone called be by my new last name after I got married. Takes some getting used to.
Today I picked up all the stuff that was donated, and holy cow it’s a lot of stuff! We are so thrilled to be taking so many items representing hope and love to these children who might not know hope or love. We pray that these things will be more than just toys or underwear or sheets. We pray that these items will help us show the heart of Jesus. A heart that loves and a heart that gives.
Now, for the reality check: We have to fit all of this stuff, plus more items that my family will be giving us this weekend, plus several pounds of infant antibiotic that we’ll get on Sunday, plus clothes for the both of us for 10 days, plus toiletries, medicines, and a whole lot more in only 2 suitcases and 2 carry-ons. The suitcases can’t be over 70 lbs and the carry-ons can’t be over 23 lbs. Whoa. I’m gonna need to ask Mary Poppins how she gets all her stuff in that purse of hers because we’re gonna need that secret. We’re going to talk to our leaders about getting permission to take an extra bag. Hopefully we can work that out.
As far as any other trip plans are concerned, we’re still in the dark about our flights and our itinerary. Apparently Ethiopian Airlines is having a hard time getting it together. Our leaders said that they were on the 5th draft for our itinerary. Eesh. We will certainly be filling you in once we get more details. One thing we DO know at this point is that we will be flying to Washington DC on the 28th and spending the night there before flying out to Africa on the 29th. We’re actually excited to get the adventure started a day early!
So anyways, that’s all the news for now! As soon as I find out any more details, I’ll be posting them for you! That way you can know how to pray more specifically for us. Thank you (for like the 100th time) for being so supportive of us and for all your many prayers.
